Long running anxiety disorder coupled with failure of medicines makes the sufferer more conscious of his anxiety, thus making it severe. In such cases, alternative therapies may provide the needed cure. Also, if started in early stages, these therapies work as self help and may remove the need of medication altogether.

These therapies help you to recognize and manage your anxiety. Usually a trained person called as the Therapist will have sessions with you. The length, frequency and term of these guided sessions will depend on your recovery. These therapies require patience and you need to stick to them to get cured completely.

The most common among the many therapies used to treat anxiety are Psychotherapies. Whatever the stage or duration, Psychotherapies are promising as they don’t offer any side effects and target the root cause of anxiety itself- the thought process. The premise in such a therapy is that our actions are governed by our thoughts and thus by modifying our thoughts, we can modify our behavior.

Two Common Psychotherapies Are

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – Cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most popular therapy and has helped a lot of people. It is especially effective in the treatment of anxiety, depression and similar mood related disorders.

This therapy has two parts Cognitive and Behavioral. The cognitive part focuses on your thought process. The therapist helps you to identify the “Negative thoughts” and then the therapy enters the crucial stage of “modifying”. Modifying your thoughts requires unfreezing the old thoughts (clearing your mind of the stubborn negative thoughts), building new and positive thoughts and freezing the new thoughts (assimilate the new thoughts and avoid reverting back to the old ones).

The Therapist is a Psychopath—–hello? A psychopath is a person who kills without remorse!!!! Please check who will help you unfold yourself to install a new thought process. He may use relaxation techniques to hold you on to a stage till you are completely ready to move on to another stage. The behavioral part of CBT helps you to learn the skills and methods to cope with the anxiety producing situations.

Meditation Therapy – Meditation is an age-old technique that has been used in the Eastern world to “tame the thought process”. We tend to think too many things together and this generates anxiety. Meditation is a relaxation technique that stops these random thought processes. In this technique, the therapist teaches you to disconnect yourself from the world and its processes. Mind and body are brought to a tension free relaxed state where you feel more calm and confident. It teaches you postures to relax your muscles and loosen your body. The breathing techniques channel the thought processes.

Apart from these Psychotherapies, other therapies that treat anxiety disorder are Homeopathy, Nutrition therapy and Ayurveda. These therapies can be combined with each other and in severe cases, can be clubbed along with medication to attain fast and complete recovery.
